Tom Malterre MS, CN has been interested in nutritional sciences since he was a 10 year old boy. He holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in nutritional sciences from Bastyr University, is a faculty member of the Institute for Functional Medicine, and has over 18 years of clinical experience in functional nutrition. Tom has been the director of education at multiple companies including Seeking Health, and Functional Medicine of Idaho. He was also a medical affairs member at Thorne Research for 7 years where he traveled across North America and lectured to physicians about multiple nutritional biochemistry topics. What drove Tom to write the best-selling The Elimination Diet book? After suffering from unexplained intestinal issues, joint pain, brain fog, and fatigue, Tom found out that Celiac disease and multiple food sensitivities were behind his troubles by doing an elimination diet. With his newly calm intestinal tract, boundless energy, and sharp focus, Tom felt like he was experiencing life on a whole new level. Inspired by these incredible changes, Tom started learning about elimination diets from Dr. Jeffrey Bland, Dr. Alan Gaby, Dr. Jonathan Wright, Dr. Joeseph Pizzorno, Dr. Tom O'Bryan and others. After reading countless books and research articles and recommending elimination diets to numerous clients that had miraculous experiences, Tom was convinced that he had stumbled onto one of the most important tools in changing a persons’ health. He felt he had to share this amazing transformational diet with the world. Tom worked with Alissa Segersten to add delicious and nutritious recipes to the diet and the book The Elimination Diet was born. For foundational books on how to cook with nourishing whole foods while getting foundational functional medicine information, Tom has provided both scientific knowledge and clinical experience found in the pages of the Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook and the Nourishing Meals Cookbook that he co-authored with Alissa Segersten.
