Joe Sledge

Joe Sledge is a North Carolina native who grew up on the Outer Banks, "about a mile from where the Wright Brothers flew." While attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he developed a love of exploration, road trips and finding hidden bits of history. After graduation, he traveled extensively, crossing the country twice, and traveling from Mexico to Canada. Joe lived and married in Monterey, California, where he worked as a special education teacher. After living in California for 10 years, he and his wife moved back to North Carolina.

With many journeys under his belt, Joe has documented his travels and curiosities. His first book is Did You See That? A GPS Guide to North Carolina's Out of the Ordinary Attractions. The book stemmed from the use of technology to help investigate and find unknown and difficult to locate spots throughout the state. With the advent of aerial imaging such as Google Earth and GPS units for cars, finding these out of the way oddities have been made much easier. Did You See That? puts all these together in one place.

Joe continued his series with Did You See That? On the Outer Banks, a book that covers many lesser known facts, places, and bits of history that aren't in most guidebooks. Being from the coast gave him a local's understanding of the importance of many events that most people don't know.

Did You See That? Too! is the companion to his first book, Did You See That? It continues the tradition of odd places with the GPS coordinates included. In Did You See That? Too! there are even stranger and more out of the way spots to find, places that just wouldn't fit into the first book at the time.

Joe continues his work with new books coming out soon, including a collection of ghostly tales and legends, and where to see them. Continuing with his coastal searies will be Did You See That? Cape Fear Coast and Beyond, about the southern NC beaches and towns, with all the weird stuff that includes thrown in.
