Greg Rubin, native horticulturalist and design/build landscape contractor, was born in Burbank, California in 1961. He acquired an Engineering degree at California State University, Northridge in 1989, and was employed in a successful career as an aerospace engineer for a number of years. However, while attending university, he developed a passionate avocational interest in California native plants. His interest grew into his vocation when he founded California's Own Native Landscape Design, Inc. in 1995. As a licensed contractor specializing in California native landscapes, he has been involved in over 700 installations, primarily in southern California. Greg believes an ecological approach to native landscaping, in stark contrast to standard ornamental horticultural practices, has been responsible for unparalleled success with the native palette. These gardens emphasize year round appeal, regional identity, low maintenance, water efficiency, rich habitat, and fire-resistance. Greg is a popular speaker on the subject of native landscapes, and has given lectures at many organizations, such as Huntington Gardens, Cal Tech, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He has appeared in numerous publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Sunset Magazine, California Gardener, and Kiplinger's. His co-author is Garden Writer Lucy Warren. Both currently reside in the San Diego area.
