Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the Prime Minister and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai.

The third son of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, he was born in Dubai in 1949 and studied there before travelling to attend the Bell Cambridge English school and the Mons Officer Cadet School before returning to Dubai to become Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police Force in 1968 and the UAE’s Minister of Defence in 1971. In 1995, he was appointed Crown Prince of Dubai and 2006 acceded as ruler of Dubai and the Prime Minister and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates.

Following in his father Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum’s footsteps, he is the driving force behind Dubai’s remarkable transformation into a major global city. He managed the world’s largest man made harbour, the Jebel Ali Port and Free Zone and created one of the world’s largest marine terminal operators, Dubai Ports World.

In 1985, he launched the world’s fastest-growing airline, Emirates, and embarked on the strategic expansion of Dubai International Airport to become one of the world’s busiest airports. His initiatives in creating strategic economic opportunities for Dubai have resulted in ground-breaking enterprises such as Dubai Internet City, Media City, Dubai International Finance Centre and Dubai World Central, the worlds’ first purpose-built aerotropolis. Today Dubai stands as a major hub for international trade and is home to over 2 million people representing over 190 nationalities.

A passionate proponent of open, service-led governance and strategic planning, Sheikh Mohammed has led major reforms of both the governments of Dubai and the UAE’s Federal government. A renowned philanthropist, his many charitable activities are grouped together under the Mohammed bin Rashid Global Initiatives (MBRGI).

He is a leading figure in global horse racing, having founded the famous Godolphin stable as well as the world’s richest race, the Dubai World Cup held annually at the Meydan Racecourse. A trained pilot and world champion endurance rider, he is also an acclaimed poet in the Arabic nabati style.
