Michael L. Frizell

Michael Frizell is the editor of The Learning Assistance Review, the peer-reviewed journal of the National College Learning Center Association. Along with Laura Sanders and David Reedy, he served as an editor of NCLCA’s first book, Learning Centers in the 21st Century: A Modern Guide for Learning Assistance Professionals in Higher Education. In 2019, he formed and chaired the Past Presidents Council, a body designed to act as counsel and support special initiatives.

At the height of the COVID-19 crisis, Frizell spearheaded an initiative to collect the stories and observations of learning center leaders across the country into one volume, Rising to the Challenge: Navigating COVID-19 as Higher Education Learning Center Leaders. The special issue shares the stories of forty-seven learning centers and how they were able to meet the needs of students during the spring and fall of 2020. He also transitioned TLAR to a digital form and print on demand.

Frizell holds a B.A. in theatre from the College of the Ozarks, an M.A. in theatre and an M.A. in creative writing from Missouri State University, and an M.F.A. in creative nonfiction from the University of Arkansas at Monticello. You can find his work in the National Gallery of Writing, The Red Ink Journal, The Moon City Review, Saddlebag Dispatches, and others, and his poetry featured as part of The Good Men Project.

As a writer for TidalWave Comics, he creates comics based on the lives of the famous and infamous. Recent publications include biographies of musicians Prince and Miley Cyrus, politicians Pete Buttigieg and Kamala Harris, a prequel and a sequel to Netflix’s Tiger King, and more. His fiction comics with the company include Stormy Daniels: Space Force and The Fantasy World of Bettie Page. Both comics feature the authorized likenesses of the artists. Stormy Daniels serves as an executive producer of the comic bearing her name.

Frizell wrote the forwards to the re-releases of Harold Robbins’ novels for Oghma Creative Media, the publisher of his creator-owned graphic novel Bender, about America’s first serial killer family of the same name from the Midwest. The graphic novel was serialized in Saddlebag Dispatches magazine and released as a collected edition in 2018.

Michael Frizell lives in Springfield, Missouri, with his wife, Julia, a Health Education navigator at Ozarks Technical Community College.
