Michael Levitt (1947-) was born in Detroit, Michigan and now lives in Rhode Island. He attended Colorado College, Oakland University, and graduate school at the University of Michigan. He became a magazine editor in New York in 1973. Nautical Quarterly, where he was a founder and managing editor for 10 years, won a National Magazine Award for Design -- the first boating magazine so honored. Levitt was executive editor at what is now Sailing World magazine, a contributing editor to Yachting magazine and a contributor to Sail magazine. Levitt has written 14 books. His "America's Cup 1851-1992 The Official Record" won a Benjamin Franklin Award presented by the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA). He has co-authored books with such "name-brand" sailors as Dennis Conner, Ted Hood, Tom Whidden and Cam Lewis. Levitt has also written on Formula 1 auto racing and politics: "A Tissue of Lies Nixon vs. Hiss." He was for 16 years communications director of the New York Yacht Club. His latest book is "The Art and Science of Sails Revised Edition" co-authored in 2016 by Tom Whidden, president of North Technology Group.
