Marianne Freiberger was born and raised in Münster, Germany. She started a degree in pure maths at Queen Mary University of London, in 1992 and after some time of travelling and working all sorts of jobs, continued at the same University to do a PhD and a three-year postdoc. Her research focussed an area of maths called holomorphic dynamics, which gave us the famous Mandelbrot set. Marianne discovered her passion for maths and science communication when she joined Plus magazine (http://plus.maths.org) in 2005. Together with Rachel Thomas she has been co-editing the magazine ever since. Plus is a free online magazine which aims to bring mathematical research to life for the general public, and reveal the maths behind every day life. Together with Rachel Thomas, Marianne also writes and edits popular science books, writes for publications including New Scientist, and teaches science writing to undergraduate and postgraduate students. She has given presentations to school students about the applicability of mathematics, to mathematicians about communicating mathematics, and to journalists about understanding mathematics in the media. She has been an invited speaker at several conferences, including the International Congress of Mathematicians 2010 and TEDx Eastend 2015.
