My fondest early memories are of the two-room school house where Mrs. Joseph, our 3rd and 4th grade teacher, told us about Sacajawea, Lewis and Clark, and so many others of those early days. She said each one of us was an Oregon pioneer and I think we all believed her. I know I did. I became interested in history when I was very young. Even before the Air Force, college, a radio career as a DJ and newscaster, and nearly two decades as a reporter and columnist for the Mail Tribune newspaper--My great grandmother had let me read some of my ancestor's Civil War letters. These two women and my time working as Historian at the Southern Oregon Historical Society made all the difference. I was hooked on history. I try to find the humanity in the stories I write, the little things often overlooked in a person's daily life. I usually leave the major historic figures to someone else. I prefer to tell the tales of everyday people, the people who so often have been forgotten. I write because I love to tell stories. I hope you will enjoy them.
