A journalist, writer, copywriter, and award-winning blogger, Roxanne Hawn works from the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, USA, where she lives with her human soul mate, Tom; an elderly Lab + Greyhound named Ginko; and a new Border Collie puppy named Clover.
Roxanne began blogging about her Heart Dog / canine soul mate, Lilly, in April 2007. A real-time memoir, the blog — called Champion of My Heart — chronicled life with a brilliant, sensitive dog. Then, things became complicated following Lilly’s rare adverse rabies vaccine reaction. The fight for Lilly’s life lasted 693 days. Lilly died December 17, 2013.
Heart Dog: Surviving the Loss of Your Canine Soul Mate stems from that experience. Roxanne’s recovery from the profound loss remains ongoing.
Roxanne began writing about pets, when she worked for the American Animal Hospital Association and later for the American Humane Association. During this period, she served on the board of directors for the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (a coalition of animal welfare groups). Roxanne also volunteered for many years at an animal shelter, where she witnessed firsthand what happens when the human-animal bond breaks or never forms.
For her blog (championfomyheart.com), Roxanne won the 2010 Best Dog Blog Award from DogTime Media and the 2010 Community Engagement Award from the Humane Society of Boulder Valley.
