As a member of three U.S. Olympic rowing teams Fred Borchelt reached the highest level of excellence in athletic competition. After competing in the 1976 Montreal Olympics he won the bronze medal in the pair with cox event at the 1979 world championships, the silver medal in the coxed four at the 1981 world championships and the bronze medal also in the coxed four at the 1982 world championship regatta. The pinnacle of his career came at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics where he was a member of the silver medal winning eight oared crew.

Fred's coaching career has spanned four decades at the high school, collegiate and elite levels. His Harvard freshman heavyweight crew won the Eastern Sprints championship in 1990. He was the novice coach and head coach of crew at Saint John's High School from 2008 to 2012 when his crews won four medals at the NEIRA championship regatta. He was the director of the Boston Rowing Center helping elite athletes prepare for the 1988 Olympic team.

Fred’s first e-book "Power 10 An Olympian Shares 10 Ways to Improve Your Rowing" was published in November, 2014. His second e-book "Another Power 10 Rowing and Coaching Advice from an Olympic Oarsman" was published in August, 2019.
