Edward C. Nolan is an assistant professor of education at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, supporting undergraduate and graduate students to develop a richer understanding of teaching and learning. He has 19 years of classroom teaching experience in both middle and high schools and was department chair for 15 years. He was also the director of mathematics, preK to grade 12, for Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland for five years. He was a master teacher in the Towson University UTeach program for four years, preparing secondary mathematics and science teachers for the classroom. His research interests lie in supporting preservice and in-service teachers to make sense of mathematics for teaching through what they notice and how they respond to it.

He has been published in state and national journals and has presented at state and national conferences, including webinars for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and TODOS mathematics organization.

Edward won the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 2005. An active member of NCTM, he is a former president and executive director of the Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics and former president of the Maryland Council of Supervisors of Mathematics.

Edward is a graduate of the University of Maryland. He earned a master’s degree in educational administration from Western Maryland (now McDaniel) College and his doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of Maryland.
