I wasn’t always a writer. I spent most of my adult life building and managing media businesses in Eastern Europe. In all, I spent 15 years living and working in Poland, Ukraine, Russia and Turkey. I started writing my blog, Digital Tonto, in 2009, mostly to write about my experiences.
My years abroad were a non-stop adventure. I'd land in a new country and would have to learn the language, culture and how to build a business. Every place was different, with its own history, culture and taboos. I quickly learned that to truly understand a place, you had to immerse yourself in its people. A late night in a local pub could sometimes teach you more than a hundred guidebooks.
I take that same approach to my writing today. I've found that every field of endeavor, no matter how technical or esoteric, embeds itself in the people who pursue its mysteries. I find that the best service I can do my readers is to allow their stories to tell themselves.
