Steve Hart, Author of the book "Modern Rock Tumbling" In the Spring of 2008, Steve Hart's wife, Sharon, underwent triple bypass surgery and, while the operation was fully successful, she needed Steve's full-time care at home for many weeks until she fully recuperated. During those long days, Steve began to research the history and practice of rock tumbling, and gradually accumulated an enormous amount of data. He kept his rotary rock tumblers busy night and day, and soon began to experiment with vibratory rock tumblers. More data was collected from his experiments, and eventually, a book began to take shape. Steve was a Mechanical Engineer by education and had spent many years in the lapidary arts, making cabochons and creating gold and silver jewelry. He had never written a book before, but the idea to help modern rock tumblers achieve consistently good results compelled him to keep writing. The book had to help beginners get started, but also needed to appeal to experienced rock tumblers. He arranged to teach some of his friends how to tumble rocks and kept notes on the troubles they had getting started. He talked to experienced rock tumblers and asked them what their secrets were and where they needed help the most. Finally the book was finished and ready for printing. In the years since selling the first copy of the book, Modern Rock Tumbling has become the new standard for assisting rock tumblers understand the process of first shaping, then removing the scratches to produce a good polish.
