“I am a process person. My process is fed by my love of being outdoors. I’m passionate about coming up with ideas and working out the kinks. This leads to more discoveries, an evolution. I make the art and then the art makes me.” New England artist, Wen Redmond explores her medium, fiber, focusing on experimentation and expanding its presentation. Her unique artistic work merges digital processes, photography, collage, media mix and surface design. Wen Redmond has been a fiber artist since 1976. Batik and weaving evolved into folk art quilts and a love of the modern art quilt expression. She continues to evolve and experiment. Her work centered on abstract expressionism using dyed natural material and surface design, creating gentle tonal contrasts and layers that interact with each other. Her work involves photography on fiber, whether it’s printed, transferred, and now includes paper or created substrates. She plays with presentations, creating new ways to manipulate the final result. She has created several innovative digital fiber techniques. Holographic Images involves multiple layered pieces using photographs printed on silk organza and surface designed fabrics. These pieces create a 3-D reflection that moves as the viewer changes positions. Textured Photographs involves the use of molding paste to create mixed media fiber photographs. These resultant painterly photographs are thin enough to be sewn or collaged into small compositions. These techniques have been published in a variety of magazines and books. She has DVD’s, available though Interweave Publishing, on both of these techniques. She continues to experiment with digital fiber, printing her manipulated photographs on various materials, including textural stitching as drawing lines. These pieces are receiving awards and recognition. It’s a fascinating use of fiber in art. Wen delights in creating dialogue, changing your perspectives and perceptions of fiber. She has published a book with CT Publishing, on her digital processes.
