James Parsons is Professor of Music History at Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. The Cambridge Companion to the Lied is the first collection of essays to consider the German art song, or Lied, from its beginnings in the middle of the eighteenth century to the middle of the twentieth. The volume contains articles on major German-song composers such as Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Richard Strauss, and Gustav Mahler.
