I started to write Girl on the Riptide as a vehicle to help me through some of the challenges I have personally faced in what is an increasing hard and unforgiving world… yet the further I delved into the story and developed the character the more deeply I had to consider motivations and inspirations. I discovered that the answers lay within the women who have passed through my life, as so many of them came to mind. I thought deeply on their flaws and weaknesses and then on the incredible strength and resilience they have shown in times of unimaginable suffering. Over the years I have heard so many stories from women who have faced seemingly insurmountable challenges. Some have fought serious diseases and won the battle, and there have been others who have not survived. There are mothers looking after disabled children and others facing the struggles of children with learning disabilities, and then there are mothers looking after children with terminal illnesses, and daughters selflessly nursing elderly parents who have long forgotten who they are. There are women facing problems within their relationships and many who are trapped within the cycle of violence in unions they feel powerless to escape. Although all these women are very different and come from many walks of life, the one thing that stands out to me with all women is their indomitable spirit. They fiercely defend and protect their children and loved ones and never give up on them. They are all the Warrior women.
