Author Todd Murphy is a long-time member of Laurentian university Behavioral Neurosciences Research Group, known for the God Helmet, which operates under the direction of Dr. Michael A Persinger. He has published in the Journal for Near-Death Studies, Psychology Reports, Activitas Nervosa Superior, Neuroscience & Medicine, and the journal, Neuroquantology. He's also the developer of the Shakti and Shiva Neural stimulation systems, which made Dr. Persinger’s pioneering neural stimulation work available to the general public. Murphy's studies in the science of religious experience began in 1985, becoming increasingly professional until his work found publication in academic journals, beginning in 1998. In his early life, he had temporal lobe epilepsy, which gave him a wide range of spiritual experiences. This set the stage for his eventual career in the neuroscience of mysticism.

Decades before he became involved with neuroscience, Todd Murphy was homeless for 2.5 years, and has written a book about the experience. Murphy is also a homeless activist.
