Mòrag Anna NicNèill is from the Hebridean island of Harris. She was a teacher for more than 25 years but now writes full-time. She won a Scottish Book Trust/Gaelic Books Council New Writers Award in 2015 and her work has won several awards since then. In addition to being shortlisted for the Donald Meek Award three times, she has won the Comunn Gàidhealach prize for best teenage fiction (Granaidh Afraga), the Chrisella Ross Memorial Prize for children’s fiction (Artair sa Chaisteal) and fiction book of the year at the 2020 Gaelic Literature Awards (An Tiortach Beag agus Sgeulachdan Eile). She was also awarded the Ailsa Quaich and the Lewis & Harris Gold Medal for poetry at the Royal National Mod in 2017, and best script prize at the Gaelic FilmG Short Film Awards in 2018. In addition to writing poetry and prose, she also works as a translator and proofreader, and has translated several children’s books into Scottish Gaelic, including the children’s classic Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery (Anna Ruadh, Bradan Press, 2020).
