Derrick was born and raised in South Africa. His love for music began as a child, when his mother first taught him to play piano. While being musically-minded and creative is a trait that runs through his family tree, Derrick also found the intricacies behind music and musical notes fascinating and mind-boggling. In his later teenage years he formed South Africa’s first Trance band known as Nagual, where he led the electronic aspects of their productions and also played Didgeridoo. With the limited technology available to him at the time, once the band went their separate ways, he created numerous tracks and developed his own ‘come-out-and-play-fairies’ style that was easily recognizable, even in the dead of night.
Moving to the mountains in his early twenties, he began working with a ‘brainwave machine’; a device that specifically runs brainwaves through headphones, accompanied by pulsing lights. Here he began to understand just how deeply everyday frequencies and pulses affect our everyday life.
Slowly but surely, pieces of the puzzle began coming together as he started a personal study of how musical frequencies and brainwave frequencies coincide; their similarities and differences. Focusing on the individual aspects of singular frequencies, he then realized the pattern – how everything functioning in life, and everything that creates life, does so using harmony; harmony in numbers, frequencies and vibrations. Indeed, music and numbers – he realized – are the building-blocks of all life.
And so he shared his insights with the world by writing his first book ‘Mathemagical Music production’. Interestingly enough he was not a writer at all, to begin with, but had to use the spoken word to portray his message. His findings soon became noted around the world, with musicians from all corners turning to him for advice on how to make music that is in perfect harmony with, and has equal intent to, the Universe itself.
He lives along the Garden Route, South Africa, with his wife, son, and three hounds, and continues to search deeper and deeper each day for better ways to explain the benefits and significance of music and math with regards to the creation of our Universal and personal lives.
