Cian Foley B.Sc. Pg.Dip., is an expert software engineer from Waterford City in Ireland and author of Don’t Eat for Winter - The Anti-Autumnal Eating Guide, and For Focal Sake - A 32 County Guide to Irish Slang. Nicknamed ‘Chubby’ in school, he was always prone to gaining weight and ended up weighing almost 260lbs by the age of 35. Over the course of 5 years of practical learning about sports and nutrition he lost 90lbs and become 2 time European, pan-American at the Arnold’s in Columbus Ohio, and World amateur kettlebell champion in the long cycle discipline, cleaning and jerking 2x50lb kettlebells for as many repetitions as possible in 10 minutes. Even with all this training Cian could not out-rep his diet. Not until he began looking at a more Palaeolithic approach with consideration of the seasons. He came up with the Don’t Eat for Winter (DEFoW) hypothesis and approach to diet, which avoids high carb+fat combinations. This combination is unique to autumn, and Cian suggests that this is a contributor to the obesity epidemic with people eating autumnally in every meal and snack 24/7/365, preparing their bodies for a winter that never comes. Applying his diet principles he moved on from Kettlebell Sport and is now a natural bodybuilder, taking his transformation to another level. He was runner up in this years master’s category in the Irish natural bodybuilding national championships, run by the NBFI. Cian hopes that his anti-autumnal approach, DEFoW, will help others that are pre-disposed to gaining body fat by helping them safely navigate the obesogenic autumnal environment we are exposed to daily.
