Melinda M. Mangin, Ph.D., is a faculty member at Rutgers University where she teaches and conducts research related to trans students and teacher leadership in the context of K-12 schools. Melinda is an award-winning author whose scholarship is informed by her previous experience as a public high school Spanish teacher in New York City. She is a frequent speaker on the topic of transgender children and teacher leadership, presenting at national conferences as well as at local schools and teacher education preparation programs. Melinda is the author of “Transgender Students in Elementary School: Creating an Affirming and Inclusive School Culture,” co-author of “Examining Effective Teacher Leadership: A Case Study Approach,” and co-editor of “Effective Teacher Leadership: Using Research to Inform and Reform.” Melinda’s article “Transgender Students in Elementary Schools: How Supportive Principals Lead” (Educational Administration Quarterly) won the 2019 article of the year from the Queer Studies Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). She is a founding member and organizer for Stepping Stones, a New York City, PFLAG-affiliated support group for families of transgender and gender-expansive children. Melinda’s work has received generous support from the Spencer Foundation.
