After over 25 happy and very varied years in logistics, I thought I had retired. However my enthusiasm refused to die, and I decided to write a book. I found that writing came naturally – people tell me that I write in an easy to read, accessible way, and explain complex points clearly and in language which can easily be understood. I had my first exposure to logistics during my gap year, working in stock control and telephone sales. After a degree at Queens’ College Cambridge and PhD at Imperial College London I joined Ford as a Graduate Trainee. I managed UK Material Transportation Operations, changing the ethos from fire-fighting to proactive quality improvement, maintained deliveries through challenges such as a UK dock strike without losing production of a single car. I joined Gefco, and led major projects such as establishing the First Private Channel Tunnel Rail Terminal in England; and an RDC network with next day JIT delivery for built up cars. Later I became Business Unit Director at Wincanton, and more recently carried out consultancy assignments at the Bank of England and Morrison’s. After a second book, I am now once again retired, and living in Hertfordshire, UK, with my wife Diane. We both look forward to being able to once again indulge our love of travel.
