Herbert E. "Joe" Castle was born in Ashland, Kentucky, and worked locally for twenty-eight years. His bachelor's degree from Morehead State University allowed him to focus his efforts on creative writing and history. His interest in the Ashland Tragedy was piqued after reading J.M. Huff's account several years prior to the printing of this book. He believed there was more to the story than what Huff had written 135 years ago (1885). After years of extensive research, he found that to be true. Rather than rewrite what Huff had already written, he felt it practical to preserve Huff's summarized account and augment it with additional facts and details necessary to complete the history of this incredible true story. Joe also has had a short story published in the "Cup of Comfort" anthology series, edited by Colleen Sell. Joe's story appears in "A Cup of Comfort for Fathers" and is titled "You Ain't Doin' Nothin' Anyway." It is a heartfelt story about his father who suffered from Alzheimer's disease.
