Psychiatrist Kim Rosenthal MD started life wanting to become an arm-flailing “life-life!” college professor. She had it all planned. She would ride a motorcycle to class each day, wearing steampunk goggles and a long flowing scarf. With a whirl of questions, her students would laugh and think and share life exponentially, discussing things like string theory and 3-act plays and Aristotle's definition of what is good. Oh, she wanted to see people pursue their dreams, wanted to be part of that journey – but eventually Rosenthal chose something even cooler. She devoted her life to helping people with mental illness believe in a happy ending, especially those with addiction. Here lies an enormous fountain of potential, individuals who under the right circumstances can be astounding. Rosenthal's journey as a travelling psychiatrist has led her from countryside to big cities to places where no one speaks English. Over the past 20 years, she’s participated in the lives of tens of thousands of patients. She’s worked at detox units, rehabs, hospitals, forensic settings, day programs, clinics, nursing homes, and caring for veterans. She is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and holds medical licenses in North Carolina, Hawaii, and Maine. The author founded the Outside-the-Box Recovery movement to promote a zest for sober living through unique, illustrated, humored, and clinically-relevant recovery material. Rosenthal hopes the movement will someday stamp out all disease, bring on global happiness, and control the weather, but for now the main purpose is to help providers help clients overcome addiction. Her latest book, The SECOND OTB Recovery Workbook, walks alongside the reader as they explore the world of early sobriety, where relapse prevention, interpersonal & coping skills, and assertive communication meet creativity and fun. That means coloring. It also means poetry, playwriting, puzzles, art therapy, communication with the future, and Rosenthal's quirky sense of humor. These days the psychiatrist works in a hospital in North Carolina. In her free time, she lives in the country with her husband, where she wards off bears with a stick and dreams about motorcycles, steampunk goggles, and flowing scarves.
