Inspired by the awesome tv show ‘Gentleman Jack’, I became a codebreaker for the West Yorkshire Archive Service that cares for the diaries written by the extraordinary Anne Lister, the global lesbian icon, who lived during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Being involved with the project to transcribe Anne Lister’s diaries helped me to really get to know this remarkable woman and I felt compelled to write about her and the woman she married, Ann Walker. ‘Anne Lister, Ann Walker and me’ was an absolute joy to write, and I hope will be an absolute joy to read.
