Gregory Berkhouse received a BS degree from the University of Texas and a MS from Indiana University, both in geology. He worked for more than a decade with Exxon Corporation in exploration and production assignments in the East Texas Basin, the Rockies, and finally the Permian Basin, where he cross-trained as a reservoir engineer. He left Exxon for Collins & Ware, a Midland independent, to avoid a transfer to Houston, and when that company was acquired by Apache Corporation a few years later, he left again for the same reason. He joined Henry Petroleum in 2000, where he participated in pioneering the Wolfberry play and later segued with the team into horizontal development. At some point along the way, he came to be regarded as a guy who might be able to write a decent book, if ever the need should arise.
