Nate Bruggeman is a Fellow in the Homeland Security Project at the Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center, where he founded the Project's Homeland Security Policy Paper Series. Nate serves as the Executive Editor of the Paper Series, and he occasionally publishes papers in the Series. He also is an accomplished homeland security practitioner. Nate cut his teeth working on complex and challenging homeland security policy issues first in the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Policy and then at U.S. Customs and Border Protection. After a stint back in private law practice and in the Colorado Department of Law (representing the Marijuana Enforcement Division), he returned to the homeland security field. In addition to his academic work, Nate advises clients on homeland security matters and has been developing cutting-edge training products about homeland security. His writing has appeared in numerous publications, including the Washington Post, the Denver Post, and the Seattle Times. Nate is passionate about helping the public understand what homeland security is, how the enterprise operates, and the roles different parts of government and society -- including the public at large -- play in it.
