As co-founder and co-head of legendary PR company Savage & Best, Jane Savidge is widely credited as being one of the main instigators of the Britpop movement that swept the UK in the mid 1990s. During this time, Savage & Best represented Suede, Pulp, The Verve, Elastica and Longpigs, whilst representing many other artists of the era including the Cranberries, The Fall and Jesus and Mary Chain. She is the author of Lunch With The Wild Frontiers (2019) and Here They Come With Their Make Up On: Suede, Coming Up and More Adventures Beyond The Wild Frontiers (2022). Jane Savidge's third book, Pulp's This Is Hardcore was published by Bloomsbury as part of their 33 1/1 series on March 7, 2024. Praise for Jane Savidge's This Is Hardcore: "This Is Hardcore is more than a book about an album; it’s a love letter to music itself.” LOUDER THAN WAR. “An exquisite blend of insider stories and facts, a brilliant read … the best book I've read in ages ” Critical Popcorn. "Offering unique insight into the record as an entity as well as the evolution of each of its individual tracks, Jane Savidge’s Pulp’s This Is Hardcore is every bit as entertaining, informative and gossipy as its predecessors” - Classic Pop magazine “Essential reading, plain and simple. Not just for fans of Pulp hoping to learn more about the beloved frontman, but a clear case for how fame affects the soul and the achievement of it can come crashing down” - Cult Following. “Alongside Savidge’s insights into the record, she has picked apart each song on the record in meticulous detail with insights from Jarvis Cocker. Something that’s great too is that Savidge doesn’t just stop there with insights into the writing, recording, and release of the album: B-sides and outtakes all have a light shone on them too”- BUZZ magazine. “Reading Savidge’s book, it’s clear that This Is Hardcore was a deliberate attempt by Cocker and Pulp to torch the scene through which they made their name” - Daily Telegraph. “Savidge knows the album backwards, understands which song borrows from The Miracles, knows where the sound sample on the title track comes from, and recalls how Stannah Stairlifts baulked at being portrayed as a transit towards death. That’s why, in the video for ‘Help The Aged’, the stairlift stops at the first floor. Heaven was a step too far” - UNCUT "Savidge picks at the album’s bones, track by track, with warmth, candour and insight, and her conversational prose is engaging.” The Big Issue. “Witty insights into the music and a chatty, conversational tone that creates a huddled intimacy around a record that drew some pretty stark dividing lines for both fans and band alike. Top-drawer study of Pulp’s top-shelf reaction to fame.” Record Collector.
