Hello Folks, I am a US Marine Veteran. I spent two summers and three winters as the Winter Site Manager at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. This was nearly three years in total length. This is the subject of my book Cold: Three Winters at the South Pole. The book describes the United States Antarctic Program, USAP, the South Pole winter crews, the type of things we faced and my thoughts on leadership. At the South Pole during winter, it's dark, cold (can be lower than minus 100F/76C) and there is no way to get out from mid-February to about the beginning of November. I have a major interest in historical exploration and have a home in Rockport Texas. I have a very kindhearted wife (Melissa) and due to that have 20 cats! Update January 2023: I want to thank all that have purchased my book and hope you enjoyed it. I also wanted to thank any that have done reviews of it. I feel I should give additional information that may help you decide whether or not the book is right for you and may make it more enjoyable. First, it is a memoir and as such I have inserted myself and things that have happened to me in my life, into the story. I thought the reader might find that interesting as it would help them better understand my point of view and what I experienced. The book is not a historical biography of the great Antarctic explorers of the past. I do write of them and my utmost respect for their great deeds which play a large role in my life and how I approached my South Pole assignment. I was not the perfect leader and have no problem pointing out some of my many flaws. I think in the end most will enjoy the insertion, but a very few particularly those cursed with the combination of jealousy, a highly competitive nature and insecurities may not. Second my book is not an extension of the cleverly written but jaded and to me ultimately depressing book: "Big Dead Place." While BDP has authenticity as to the kind of the extreme, usually alcohol fueled things that can happen in modern day Antarctica, it focuses on the negative and the absurd. While this can be fun to read, I do not believe it is representative of the program as a whole. I believe the USAP is better than that. Last, I welcome contact and any questions about the book or other things. I could not muster the vanity for my own website so if you are interested you can start with Facebook Messenger, and we can go from there. Thanks! Wayne White
