JEAN LAPLANCHE was born in Paris on June 21, 1924 and died in Beaune on May 6, 2012. Psychoanalyst, psychiatrist, and teacher, he left a work unfolding in several dimensions. A former student of the École Normale Supérieure, agrégé in philosophy, doctor of state in letters and human sciences, intern in psychiatric hospitals, professor at the Sorbonne, professor emeritus at the University of Paris VII, doctor honoris causa from the universities of Lausanne, Buenos Aires and Athens, he was named Knight of Arts and Letters (1990), he also received the Mary S. Sigourney Award (1995). Jean Laplanche was a founding member and later president of the Psychoanalytical Association of France. In addition to his involvement in psychoanalysis and the training of psychoanalysts, he has assumed essential editorial responsibilities: he directed the Library of Psychoanalysis (Presses Universitaires de France), the collection Voies nouvelles en psychanalyse, and the journal Psychanalyse at the university. He also directed the publication of a new translation of the complete works of Freud (OCP/Psychoanalysis, Presses Universitaires de France). He is the author of numerous books, articles, and conferences.
