I came to the University of Cambridge as a young student in the early 1960s studying maths and physics and never left. One of my very first courses involved writing a simple program for the early valve-based university computer. This started my lifelong passion for using computers and coding to solve problems in science. I have been privileged to experience, and in a small way contribute to, the steady growth of computing power over more than 5 decades. This growth must be at least a factor of 10,000,000,000 and has total transformed our lives. My recent book on CUDA is partly a celebration of this extraordinary achievement. Unsurprisingly my hobbies include science fiction and stargazing. I also like cats.
