Geoffrey Squires (b.1942). Irish poet and translator. Grew up in Co. Donegal, Ireland. He has a masters degree from Cambridge University and a doctorate from Edinburgh. After living and working in higher education in a number of countries (France, Iran, United States, Greece) he settled in England and is now retired and living in Hull, Yorkshire. His poetry is collected in two main books, Untitled and other poems, and Abstract Lyrics, both published in Ireland and now available online. Much of his poetry has been published in bilingual English-French editions by Editions Unes, Nice. His translations of early Irish poetry 600-1200 are collected in My News for You and the expanded and revised 106 Early Irish Poems. He has also published anthologies in English of the Persian classics, Hafez and Rumi, the first of which won the Lois Roth annual translation prize of the American Institute of Iranian Studies. More recently The New Verse: a selection of modern Persian poetry was published by Mazda Publishers in California. His most recent ebook is Three Verses for Voice, available on Kindle. He has given readings in a number of countries and contributed to the scholarly literature in the field.
