Ellie spent a large part of her childhood living abroad and traveling. The vibrant markets of the Middle and Far East triggered her passion for colour, texture, and pattern, and this influence is expressed through her textiles. She completed both a B.A. in Textile Design, specialising in woven textiles, and an M.A. in Design for Textile Futures at Central St Martins College of Art and Design, London, where she graduated in 2006. After graduating, she moved back to Hampshire in southern England to set up her weaving business. “Elka” is a weaving and natural dye studio based in the countryside with a strong focus on sustainability and teaching. In 2018 the business became a mother and daughter concern when Ellie’s mum Claudia came on board to produce naturally dyed yarns. Having taught weaving for many years to people of all ages and abilities—and witnessed the incredibly positive effect it can have on one's mental health—Ellie is passionate about sharing her love of textiles through teaching.
