How I became interested in writing was the question I asked myself to write this introduction. As I reflected, I thought of my childhood. When your body is tired of playing – the mind still needs to be energized. I would lay on the sofa during the day with a Trixie Beldon mystery in one hand and one of Mum’s homemade biscuits in the other.
I would fall asleep after reading a book that gave me comfort after a long school day, studying subjects I didn’t enjoy. But the book, my choice, for me to lose myself in the characters and the excitement of the mystery.
With my children, I read books throughout the day. They were the listeners when they were playing with their lego or up a tree. Of course, this added to their play, and soon they would be the character – adding their layer of complexity. Sharing stories enabled great conversation and connection to each other through our days.
My love of words, dancing on the pages and feeding my imagination helped me choose to write. Every part of the stories I write has been imagined and seen in my mind, which gives some difficulty as I have to make sure the reader and the listener can visualise what I have seen. Thinking of my characters for my next book gives me excitement, forcing me to sit down (which I find hard to do - sitting, that is) to extract the pictures.
I hope I have given you enough to understand why I have started to write and illustrate stories.
