I was born in Macon, Georgia, March 22, 1944. Came from a family of farmers on my mother's side. My father was a sometime carpenter who deserted his family and moved to New Orleans before my birth. I was "boarded out" soon after my birth and moved to Norfolk, Va. in 1949 to live with a mother I did not kno, and a stepfather who turned out to be abusive.. My sister Celia and brother Howell, who were 13 and 10 years older respectively, joined me there.
At the age of 12 I was placed by Social Services in Boys Home of Va. as a result of my stepfather's abuse, including chaining me. I lived at Boys Home from '56-'63, and attended Covington High School. I excelled at basketball and baseball on the Boys Home teams, which led me to Bridgewater College to major in P.E. I flunked out, listed in the Army for three years, and got a one years paid vacation to Southeast Asia (Vietnam) for my trouble. Back to Bridgewater in '69.
Graduated BC in '70, and received my M.A. from James Madison University (Madison College) in '71. I taught and coached in Loudoun County, Va. from 1971-2002. Got married the second time in 1973, and raised two wonderful kids, Pete and Brooke, into adulthood. My second marriage, to Elaine Wehle Nunnally, also ended in divorce, but we share a deep friendship centered around our family.
I'm a lifelong Episcopalian who attended St James in Leesburg, Va., and directed a summer church camp, St. George's Camp, for the Episcopal Diocese of Va. from '84-'92. I currently live in Sterling, Va. near my daughter and her family. My son Pete became an Episcopal priest.
