In my younger days, I worked in an old people's home in Belgium, I acted with the Teatro Estable in Granada, Spain, and taught English in Marseille, France, and in Dakar, Senegal. These experiences came before, during, and after my studies. Nowadays, I teach French, translation, & interpreting at the University of Leeds in the North of England. Translation has been a passion of mine since I was a teenager. I've worked as a professional translator since 2001. Having hit my 50s, I'm concentrating on literary translation (as well as song translation) - for the fun of it. But also as a way of sharing my enthusiasm for literature. In that domain, I am drawn to marginal writers - as happy with 1920s Surrealism as I am with a 1950s crime novel or the most contemporary 'autofiction'. My approach to translation is grounded in research - and it is self-consciously creative... sometimes to the point of being ludic. The theory I teach feeds into my practice. And my practice feeds back into my teaching. And that's all part of the process.
