Julia has been passionate about history since she visited Buckland Abbey, in Devon and was told the story of Drake's Drum by her father. As a child her favourite books were Robin Hood, The Children of the New Forest and Lorna Doone. She went on to study History and English at university followed by a M.A. and a teaching qualification. She has taught in a range of educational settings but is currently a freelance lecturer and writer based in the Midlands and Yorkshire. She knew she wanted to be a writer from the age of 8. In the past she has written short stories for magazines, local histories of Carlisle and the borders as well as several literacy and numeracy resources including for the BBC and for the Football Association. Julia began writing full time during the Covid lockdown of 2020. She offers a regular blog at thehistoryjar about all things historical and if she’s not at her desk or in the garden, she’s probably exploring some ruins, historic church or stately stack before heading off to a cafe for a nice cup of tea. She also dabbles with pen and ink drawings and enjoys all kinds of crafting including blackwork embroidery popularised in England by Henry VIII's first queen, Katherine of Aragon.
