Karl Travis is the third son of Jane and Murray Travis to enter the Christian ministry. Karl grew up in a small town in the Texas Panhandle and he absorbed the ethos of that region; “let them call you incompetent, but never let them call you lazy." This ethos of hard work led Karl to particularly busy and frenetic ministries in three congregations in Roswell, New Mexico, Grosse. Ile, Michigan, and finally as the senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Fort Worth, Texas. While there, he poured heart and soul into the boards of the Presbyterian Night Shelter in Fort Worth, and the James L. West Presbyterian Alzheimer’s Center, and Trinity Terrace, a continuing care retirement community in Fort Worth. He left the pastorate early due to failing health and disability. He now serves on the Board of Community Healthcare of Texas, the organization that cared for Karl when he was on hospice for 3 1/2 years. Following a life-saving surgery, he is no longer on hospice and is rebuilding a life, including the publication of his most recent book, “God’s gift of Generosity: Gratitude beyond Stewardship.”
