Rivka (Hilda) Kan Tor (Herscowitz) was born in Czechoslovakia, the sixth of seven children. When Hitler’s Germany invaded their country, she and her sister Sheindy were taken to Auschwitz, where their parents perished. While en route to the Bergen-Belsen death camp, the sisters made a daring escape to a rural German town, where they covered up their true identities and posed as German orphans for the remainder of the war, under constant crippling fear of discovery. After the war, both sisters immigrated to Israel, where they partook in the establishment of the young country and lived to see their own families grow and flourish.
