GIAM Cheong Leong, known to many simply as “Giam,” transitioned into the world of hospice and palliative care after a successful career spanning over 20 years in corporate administration. With a background in strategic planning, financial management, and resource optimization, Giam initially built his expertise in high-stakes environments, managing substantial budgets and complex operations. However, a personal calling led him to explore a different kind of work — one focused not on profit margins but on compassion, community, and the dignity of life’s final stages. While Giam’s journey into hospice and palliative care has been deeply fulfilling, he considers himself still an amateur in this field. His approach is one of openness and humility, learning from everyone around him, whether it be patients, caregivers, volunteers, or healthcare professionals. This work, he believes, requires continuous growth and reflection, and he is committed to sharing what he learns with those who may feel a similar calling. Through this book, Giam hopes to inspire others — especially those with corporate backgrounds — to consider the unique and rewarding world of social healthcare. He believes that the skills cultivated in business settings, such as strategic thinking, management, and financial stewardship, can make a tremendous impact when applied to compassionate, patient-centred care. Giam welcomes like-minded individuals who wish to transition from corporate roles into social healthcare to connect, learn, and collaborate on meaningful, impactful work. Giam’s vision is to help build a network of compassionate, sustainable care that serves communities across the Asia Pacific region. His journey is a testament to the value of bringing diverse skills into new settings and a call for others to join him in making a difference. For those who share his passion for service, he extends an invitation to connect and explore the potential to transform lives through hospice and palliative care.
