Paul Hashagen has been fighting fires since 1976. In 2003 he retired from the FDNY after twenty-five years of service, with twenty of those years in Rescue Company 1 in Manhattan. He is a former chief of the Freeport Fire Department and is still an active member of Truck Company 1. Paul is the author of 8 books, he's written numerous feature articles, and lectures nationally on the history of the fire service. His column "Rekindles" appeared in Firehouse Magazine from 1995 until 20015. In October 2017, Paul was inducted into the "Firehouse Magazine Hall of Fame" in recognition of his work as a fire historian and writer.
